Although they are called   ”timekeepers”, they do not actually keep time. It is time measures and is designed to show us how fast time travels then we can adjust our movements, schedules to work with its speed. Keep in mind that as long as we understand that measurement of anything is the comparing of it with an approve method. Example, if we need to measure the length of a two by four by eight piece of lumber, we would use a tape measurement or a piece of carpet we would use a rule or a yard stick. It has been known that the United States government has in a secure fireproof vault in one of their government buildings in Washington, a metal bar which is the authorized standard “yard” of the nation. Indeed it is also a copy of the standard yard of Great Britain.

The first talk of time went back to the bible days in Genesis; it says “the evening and the morning were the first day.” We can see the measure in that statement however not enough information to say what time it really was. It would be more so accurate if the statement read, “And the evening and the morning were the first day”. There were no plans and schedule for the people back in those days to know or understand what time it was. I suppose they could or may have used shadows to see the change in direction.

You may imagine man notice the shadow and placed a stick in the ground roughly halfway between morning and evening which we now called noon. He would then drove more little stakes in the ground along the daily path of the original shadow which sort of divide the day in number of small parts, called the sun dial. Again the book of Isaiah chapter 38 it reads about the sun dial. It was not accurate enough until hundreds of years later when the days were divided into sections, “hours” example the “sixth hour” (noon), “ninth hour” ( three o’clock), the “eleventh hour” (five o’clock) and so on. Things stated to change in the ninth century A.D when Alfred the Great came along and wanted to be more organized both employment, his religious  duties, his kingdom and to bodily rest total of three parts.

Wax  was use as well to demonstrate or figure out time by making candles using again precise length  measurement and added weight , he knew how long each inch of candle would burn. It was an approach towards the accuracy and with such experiment; they knew that candles were most effective at night and still useful during the day. The clepcydra was probably the earliest mechanical time measure although the “hour glass” was yet another form of time measure. It was Galileo who really watch and took note of that chandelier swinging back and forth caused by the wind as the front doors of the cathedral located in the City of Pisa opened in 1954.

The swinging motion of the chandelier really got Galileo thinking and concludes in his mind that it was actually a pendulum. It was later noted that no mechanical means of maintaining, obtaining a constant and accurate movement will equal to the free movement of a vibrating pendulum. Such facts led to the adoption as a means of regulating the mechanism as clocks. The clock constitute the most accurate “time measure” while operating under favorable conditions.
